5 challenges to make the most of fall
Writing
Laura Martin, she shares her crushes and discoveries with us for our greatest happiness!
Darkness at 7 p.m., wearing sherpa jackets and the return of TV dramas are getting you down? Pull yourself together immediately! We suggest turning your fall into an exciting five-event challenge that will keep you on your toes until Christmas. The gloomy season has never been so stimulating!
1st challenge: Make your preserves
You have never sealed Mason jars? No matter! It is never too late to start making homemade ketchup or pickled beets. Before their stands close, visit the region’s public markets to stock up on the last fresh fruits and vegetables.
Those in Rimouski, Rivière-du-Loup, Les Basques and Saint-Pascal continue operating until October, or even November. In addition to having tasty condiments in your pantry, you will have gifts to give at Christmas. (No, your sweet pickles may not beat Auntie Annette’s right away, but you’ll get there.)
2nd challenge: Try mountain biking
We are not going to start a heated debate, but one of the best times to visit the Bas-Saint-Laurent is in the fall. To watch the show of colours, the best seats are directly on the stage, in the heart of the forest. Of course, hiking is a classic way to enjoy the orange scenery.
But why not change things up by venturing onto the trails by mountain bike? The sport is enjoying strong growth in the region, with new centres at Mont-Saint-Mathieu and in Dégelis, among others. Follow the wave and go ride through the fallen leaves! In addition to the view, you will get the adrenaline.
3rd challenge: Learn to knit
Does fall make you feel chilly? Learn how to make your own comforting accessories to snuggle into!
At the Festival de la p’tite laine in Rivière-du-Loup, you will discover a warm and close-knit community.
Nearly 80 exhibitors will be there to inspire you.
You will notably be able to take an introductory crochet class and attend a host of workshops on different techniques. What are the chances that you will then spend all your fall evenings chaining stitches together to make Christmas gifts for the family? High.
4th challenge: Identify mushrooms
Even if you missed the Festival des champignons forestiers du Kamouraska in September, you can still catch up on your mycological knowledge. A little paradise for capped plants, the region offers different experiences to demystify these strange organisms.
Les Sentiers d’Ixworth, Pourvoirie des Trois-Lacs and Ferme Fibres et Cie, among others, will reveal what oyster mushrooms and chanterelles are hiding under their caps. Pick-your-own is possible at certain sites. Send us a photo of your risotto!
5e challenge: Get on stage
The time has come to make your secret dream of getting on stage come true.
Sign up for the Concours national de la plus grande menterie de Trois-Pistoles, presented as part of the Rendez-vous des Grandes gueules.
Drawing from a personal anecdote or a news story, you will have fun leading the audience on.
Who knows! You may discover unsuspected talents as a storyteller and then head out on a world tour!
(All that will be left is to make your friends believe it…)
