Toward the end of summer, as the colours slowly begin to change, Dégelis in Témiscouata offers a cultural experience that is off the beaten path. From August 27 to 30, 2026, Parc du Centenaire will host Dégelis, ta rivière t’appelle, an open-air theatrical production presented in an exceptional natural setting where the Madawaska River and the Devlin Bridge themselves become elements of the show.

Inspired by real events that took place between 1905 and 1945, the story, fictionalized by author Anne-Marie Turcotte, transports spectators into a world where memory, heritage, and the evolution of communications come together.

At the heart of the story is Julianna, a telephone operator who works in a telephone exchange at a time when every call passed through the hands of an operator.

Through her journey, the audience discovers events from the past in a format made possible by the digital world, spanning from the beginnings of the telephone to the digital era of 2026.

The production incorporates digital elements into the stage performance, creating immersive sound that blurs the boundaries between past and present.

Regional Creation

The project brings together several creators from the region. Production and artistic direction are handled by Stéphane Michaud, while stage direction is entrusted to Marie-Julie Landry. On stage, two actresses will bring to life characters inspired by different eras, taking spectators through the first half of the 1900s in less than an hour.

Beyond entertainment, the event also aims to become a true annual cultural gathering. The organizers hope to create a meeting place where visitors can discover the territory differently, through its stories, legends, landscapes, and the talents that bring it to life. For tourists, it is a special opportunity to extend your stay with an original activity that combines culture, heritage, and nature.

The show, with a running time of nearly one hour. Tickets are free, but as seating is limited, the public must reserve at degelis.ca, on the “Dégelis, ta rivière t’appelle” page.

This event is produced by La clé des chants, Carrefour culturel, and made possible thanks to the Ville de Dégelis, the Club Lions de Dégelis, the Government of Québec, and the MRC de Témiscouata as part of the 2024 cultural development agreement.
