Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about scented candles and melted chocolate. Here, we prefer to break with tradition and embrace more original scenarios. Whether you’re in a couple, flying solo, with friends, or with your chosen family, February is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate love in all its forms. Here are five simple ideas for enjoying our corner of paradise with your favorite person. And if you absolutely must have rose petals, we won’t judge!

Coo on snowshoes

If you prefer the silence of the forest to crowded restaurants, snowshoeing is a must. No background music, no endless hesitation over the menu: just the snow crunching underfoot and space to chat about anything and everything.

The region is full of accessible trails, and many even offer equipment rentals. In the Saint-Ludger neighborhood of Rivière-du-Loup, a torchlight walk will take place on the evening of February 13.

Hikes with a park ranger are also offered every Saturday afternoon (including February 14!) at Bic National Park.

Hiding at the movies

Nothing very original here… Ever since the Lumière brothers invented the concept, lovebirds have been taking refuge in dark theaters to “see the sights” while subtly brushing against each other’s thighs.

This year, in Rivière-du-Loup, the Vues dans la tête film festival coincides with Valentine’s Day. Whether by chance or design, two excellent Quebec films about couples (Folichonneries and Amour Apocalypse) have been scheduled for Saturday.

The screenings will be followed by a discussion with the directors and the event’s patron, Ricardo Trogi. What’s more, the old-fashioned charm of the Cinéma Princesse is just perfect for getting closer.

Splash around at the spa

Does your definition of romance include a fluffy bathrobe and eucalyptus steam jets? You’ll find what you’re looking for at one of the region’s magnificent health centers.

Let’s face it: few things beat the joy of slipping into a hot bath when it’s -1000 outside. The Noah Spa in Rimouski offers Valentine’s Day promotions, including access to its incredible ten-station pool.

Warning: you may fall asleep like a log on your way home

Intimate dinner for two

Waiting for the right moment to discover one of the six restaurants in the region that caught the eye (and taste buds!) of the prestigious Michelin Guide to Quebec?

Here’s one! In Rivière-du-Loup, La Porte arrière will fill your mouth with happiness and your eyes with stars. Closed for the winter, Côté Est in Kamouraska is reopening its doors exceptionally to welcome romantics on February 13 and 14 with a special menu of fresh pasta at reasonable prices.

In both cases, it’s best to book early so you don’t end up empty-handed. And stuck eating hot dogs in front of the TV.

Laugh together

Love rhymes with humor (for those who haven’t noticed). So why not take the opportunity to go see a funny show?

The Berger Cultural Center had the good sense to schedule the popular podcast Couple ouvert on February 12. Thomas Levac and Stéphanie Vandelac, a duo in life and on stage, will welcome a surprise comedian to discuss the joys and absurdities of life as a couple without holding back.

If you’re staying in the Rimouski area, they’ll be there the next day!
