How do the tides work in the Lower St. Lawrence?

The tidal cycle

Tides are vertical movements of water caused primarily by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun. In the Lower St. Lawrence region, we experience semi-diurnal tides, which generally produce two high tides and two low tides every 12 hours and 25 minutes. Tide height predictions can be viewed online, depending on your location, via the Government of Canada’s tide website.

Fishing in the St. Lawrence river

River waters are state waters where no fishing license is required, but there are still important regulations to follow. These include the season, the area, limits, bait, and exceptions. If you follow the guidelines, tides, and habits of these saltwater fish, you might just catch some smelt, mackerel, and even striped bass, depending on the season! Happy fishing!
