This winter, I'm trying... sledding!
Writing
Laura Martin, she shares her crushes and discoveries with us for our greatest happiness!
Everyone has memories of epic crazy carpet rides down the village hill. Who hasn’t come back from a day of sledding with red cheeks and a huge bruise on their bottom? This winter, let’s reconnect with our inner child and rediscover the joy of hurtling down a white slope on a rubber doughnut, screaming with excitement. The last one back at the top buys the hot chocolate!
Who can go sledding?
It sounds like a silly question, but it’s not so silly. Of course, if a three-year-old can sled, so can an adult. Just keep in mind that the climb back up—with a sled in tow—can be physically demanding. Fortunately, some sites offer ski lifts. Otherwise, be prepared to sweat in your clothes, as we say around here!
Since this is an activity that involves some risk, you also have to enjoy a little adrenaline rush.
A spin in the powder snow can happen so quickly. To avoid collisions and falls, always make sure the path is clear before setting off.
What do I need?
Snow gear, ideally a helmet, and… something to slide on. There are many options: snow saucers, snowboards, three-ski sleds, snow tubes, inner tubes…
It’s up to you to choose the one you prefer, depending on how daring you are and how comfortable you want to be.
For example, snow saucers are more responsive and faster, while inner tubes cushion the bumps. Most sites lend out equipment free of charge.
Where can I go tubing in the Lower St. Lawrence region?
- La Cabane du Ravage,Pohénégamook: three long tubing runs with a lift. Snowshoe trails allow you to explore the maple grove. With a little luck, you might even see some deer.
- Club de golf du Transcontinental,Pohénégamook: a golf green is transformed into a white slope for sledding in winter. Tubes are available on site. The grounds also offer cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails.
- Mont-BiencourtSki Club, Biencourt: next to the downhill ski slopes and the large chalet, a toboggan run awaits young and old alike. Inner tubes are provided, and there is a ski lift.
- Beauséjour Park, Rimouski: in the heart of the city, you can bring your own sled or borrow a saucer or carpet sled for free.
- Mont-Saint-Mathieu Park, Saint-Mathieu-de-Rioux: When their legs are tired from downhill skiing, families rush to the two 130-meter sliding lanes on inner tubes. Ski lift included.
- Bic National Park, Rimouski: Among the multitude of winter activities offered in this paradise, you can go sledding near the LePorc-Épicrelay station, just over a kilometer from the entrance. Bring your sled!
- Saint-Pacôme Golf Club: After a family ski or snowshoe outing, reward yourself with a few gentle descents. Bring your favorite sled or borrow one on site.
- Chalet des sports de Notre-Dame-du-Portage: We dare you not to let out a little scream on the exciting turn of this slide under the trees. Inner tubes available on site. Round out your day with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or skating.
- Pente Frontenac, Rivière-du-Loup:Located next to the Centre Premier Tech and the ice rink, this wide slide allows for good acceleration. Tubes are provided during opening hours.
