La route des Phares

Québec counts 43 traditional lighthouses. Today, twenty of these have been given a new lease on life thanks to the intervention of enthusiasts who have transformed these sentinels of the sea or their outbuildings into museums, inns or cottages.

Attractions and Activities

The local section of the Route des Phares begins in Rivière-du-Loup with a tour of the lighthouse on Pot à l'Eau-de-Vie. Spend a few quiet hours on a small island n the middle of the St. Lawrence! The Société Duvetnor rents charming rooms decorated in period style. A little further, on the north shore of Île Verte, the Maisons du Phare offer rooms in two houses: those of the lighthouse keeper and his assistant. Climb to the top of the oldest lighthouse on the St. Lawrence River for a birds eye view of the entire island and maybe even a glimpse of whales. Then, in Pointe-au-Père, near Rimouski, climb the 128 steps leading to the top of one of the tallest lighthouses in Canada, built in 1909. Its avant-garde architecture inspired many famous artists.
